How to Have a Vegetarian Camping Trip

Food is an essential part of any camping trip. Without food, you will not be able to enjoy your vacation, you will not even have the energy to do the activities in line for you. For vegetarians, food is a major concern because most camping foods include meat, chicken, dairy products, and other items that do not belong to a vegetarian diet. If you are a vegetarian and you want to go on a meat-free camping vacation, here are some guidelines for you to remember.
Things to Bring
First, you need to plan the things you need to bring for the trip. These include cooking equipment and eating utensils such as pots, pans, grill, stove, spoons, forks, plates, cups, can opener, kettle, and so on. Aside from that, you also have to take care of food storage like Coleman coolers, food containers, and cooler accessories. These are very important for the trip, as they would keep the food fresh and safe. You will also need to bring lots of fresh water to be used for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. Speaking of cleaning, do not forget to pack a sponge and biodegradable dish soap.
Checklist and Menu
To plan the meals right, you will need to create a checklist that will enumerate all the equipment and food ingredients you need to pack. Write down a comprehensive menu so you will have an overview of all the ingredients and cooking equipment necessary for each recipe you are planning to cook.
Vegetarian Snacks and Ingredients
Stock non-perishable food items such as grains, oatmeal, pancake mix, rice, quick-cooking grains like pasta and buckwheat, cereal, granola bars, pop corn, canned beans, trail mix, nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables, canned juice, canned vegetable soup, soy milk, cookies, and bread. Use non-meat and non-dairy ingredients for meals such as vegetarian faux meats, veggie burgers, veggie hotdogs, yogurt, tofu, and many more.
Meal Ideas
For the breakfast, you can prepare oatmeal and cereals with soymilk. You can also serve pre-baked muffins, scrambled tofu, or baked beans and toast. During lunchtime, prepare hummus from canned chickpeas and serve this with pita filled with onions, tomatoes, and cabbage. You can also create tofu salad, grilled cheese and tomato sandwiches, and buttered corn and carrot side dish.
Now for the dinner, it would be best to whip up dishes using vegetarian faux meats like grilled veggie burgers and hotdogs served with mashed potatoes, pasta or rice. You can also roast vegetables like carrots, tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and zucchini and put them on sticks to look like veggie kabobs. Cap the meal with luscious desserts like banana boats, fresh fruits, and baked goodies.
If you are going camping by yourself or with fellow vegetarians, you will not have much trouble with your diet. However, if you are joined by people who eat meat, you will need to consider and respect their food preferences. Do not force them to eat only the foods that you prepare. If they want to cook and eat meat, let them. This way, you can all have a good time during the camping vacation.

When planning a camping trip, there are some things that you can pack or do before you leave for your trip that will help you to spend your vacation relaxing and having fun rather than cleaning your site, making trips to the local store to buy accessories or having to deal with something that your forgot because there isn’t a store around.
The first thing you should do is to make a check list of what you want to take with you on the trip. Aside from clothing and the basics there are some other things that can help to make your trip a success. Be sure to include waterproof matches because you never know when rain or some other type of liquid might get your supplies wet. Wet matches equal no fire and no fire can be a real problem. You can buy waterproof matches or you can waterproof your own by dipping them in paraffin wax.
Pack a survival kit with enough supplies for everyone on the trip and a few extra. Include band-aids, wet wipes and power bars. Sun screen and bug spray are essential for outdoor activities as well as citronella candles to help keep bugs away at night. Take along plastic bags to put wet things in or things you need to discard. It is also good to pack anything that you don’t want to get wet into plastic bags.
Pack a sweatshirt and pants even if it is the middle of summer. At night you will probably be glad that you have them and it will keep you from being miserable, shivering by the fire. Lay out your own clothing and clothing for everyone in the family to make sure that you have something for every day and pack it in your suitcase by outfit so that you can just grab your outfit and get dressed without having to dig through your suitcase. Take along a pop-up mesh container for your dirty clothes to keep them separate from the clean stuff.
Get to your campsite early so that you can set up your tent or camper and still have plenty of time to explore the area and know your surroundings before night time arrives. Keep food locked in a cooler or in the car to avoid animals and bugs getting into it. Remove dirty shoes and clothing before entering your tent or camper so that you don’t have to constantly sweep the floor. You will find this particularly helpful if you are camping at the beach. Take a small broom with you just in case your tent or camper floor does get dirty.
Bring along cards, other games and reading materials in case you encounter some rainy weather. There is nothing worse then sitting in your campsite in the rain with nothing to do. Some of your best camping memories might just be playing these games or relaxing with a book.
A battery free radio is good to check up on news or impending inclement weather. You should also have some sort of hand held radio to use in case of emergencies. Bring flashlights with extra batteries. Pack maps and travel brochures in your car and your suitcase or camper. If you lose or misplace one, you will have a backup waiting for you.
Set up your campsite and tent or camper so that you can get to things easily but you still have room to move around. Keep other things away from your sleeping bags and a clear path to the door to avoid bumping into things in the middle of the night on your way to the bathroom.
Experience is the best source for ideas of what can make your camping trip fun and worry free. Talk to others who camp to see if they have any ideas. If you go on a trip and think about something that you could really use, write it down, buy it as soon as you get home and pack it with your camping supplies so you will be ready to go on your next camping trip.
It doesn’t take a lot to help make your camping vacation fun and carefree. With a little pre-planning and some organization once you get to your site, you can avoid many mishaps or emergencies that could spoil your vacation.

5 Reasons to Go on a Camping Trip with your Family

Camping has always been an American tradition. Since time immemorial, our ancestors have always enjoyed spending time in the woods, doing outdoor activities, and interacting with nature. Unfortunately, with the hectic lifestyle that most people of today lead, camping has taken a backseat in people’s lives. This should not be the case. People especially families should take time to pack their camping equipment and camping tent and go on a camping adventure. Here are five important reasons why you should.
1. Spend quality time
Camping allows you to spend quality time. Most families are too caught up with their everyday lives to stop and make a conversation with each other. When they are at home, television and other electronic gadgets rob them of time that they can use to spend time with each other. Instead of doing an interactive activity together, they all just sit on the couch and watch TV. If you go on a camping trip, you would be able to catch up with your kids and bond with them.
2. Teach kids about nature and survival skills
Another great reason to go on a camping trip is to be able to teach kids about important values and lessons like respect for nature and outdoor survival skills. While you can always teach them these by making them read books and informative resources, going on a camping trip will make them learn about them these more effectively.
3. Relax and unwind
Working all day long five to six days a week can take a toll on your health. Reduce your stress level by going on a quiet and relaxing camping vacation. The peaceful and tranquil atmosphere in the camping site will enable you to get the rest and relaxation that you need and deserve. The enjoyable activities, meanwhile, will take your mind off stressful thing such as work, bills, home problems, and so on.
4. Go on an inexpensive vacation
Camping trips are inexpensive compared to regular vacations. You will be able to save on airfare, accommodations, food, and other expenses. You don’t have to spend on airfare because you can camp in a nearby campground. You would only stay in your tent so you don’t need to spend on hotel. You can also save on food because you will be bringing and cooking your own instead of eating at restaurants.
5. Engage in outdoor activities
When you go on a camping trip, you don’t just stay in your camping tent the whole day. You will be able to do lots of enjoyable and worthwhile activities that would make the trip even more memorable. Some of the activities you can do include bird watching, wildlife viewing, hiking, trekking, mountain climbing, fishing, swimming in the lake, telling spooky stories around the campfire, and playing games with the kids like treasure hunt.
A camping trip is always an enjoyable activity. It enables you to relax and unwind, spend less on a vacation, enjoy outdoor activities, teach kids about nature and survival skills, and spend quality time with your family.
