Costa Smeralda: The Luxury Tourist Destination

Costa Smeralda, also known as the Emerald Coast, is located on the northern part of the island of Sardinia. Considered one of the premier vacation tourist destinations, Costa Smeralda is over 55 kilometers long and actually covers more than 30 square kilometers. If you have Costa Smeralda in your sights as your next vacation destination, here are some fascinating facts that you are sure to find interesting about this beautiful area of Sardinia.

Some of the towns in Costa Smeralda have quaint sounding names like Olbia, Porto Cervo, Arzachena and Liscia di Vacca. Wealthy Europeans, Russians, Americans and Arabs arrive in at the Costa Smeralda in style via private jet, which is accessible in Olbia or by helicopter service. The Perveo, which is a renowned golf club, caters to some of the most affluent people in the world.

Living in the Lap of Luxury in Costa Smeralda

There are many luxury hotels, such as the Hotel Romazzino, Hotel Pitrizza, the Cervo Hotel, and the Cala Di Volpe, are the five star choices found here. You can expect to spend two to three thousand US dollars during the prime tourist season. Complete privacy is guaranteed here. Many celebrities are here each season and often explore the ocean through the use of chartered boats. The hotels have private marina access, but the parties are normally held in Porto Cervo. The least crowded times are during September and October, when the temperatures are about 72-84 degrees. June is also very pleasant and not very crowded.

Timing Your Vacation to Costa Smeralda

If you are planning a vacation to Costa Smeralda you should coincide it with one of the many exciting events that place here.

Each September, these towns are inundated by tourists who eagerly await the start of the Sardinia Cup, a sailing regatta that is held right off the coast. With several famous boats in this competition the annual sailing regatta is a huge attraction.

But boats are not the only thing that draws people here. There are polo matches that are held from April to October near Arzachena. The popular Italian Film Festival, which is held in Tavolrar every year and the annual vintage car rally are other events that attract tourists from all over the world.

Getting a Taste of the Past in Costa Smeralda

You’ll also find the Tomba dei Giganti, or the Giants’ Grave here. Built during the Bronze Age, the Giants’ Grave is a Sardinian megalithic grave named by the locals. There are over 320 of these sites throughout Sardinia. A stone cairn covers the burial chamber. Some have an entrances similarly shaped to the cairn tombs found in Ireland.
There are two different types of the Giants’ Tombs. There are slab types, in which large slabs are buried on their end into the ground. They are usually arranged next to each other. There is a stele, which is normally the largest slab and there will usually be a doorway cut all the way through it. The sepulchers are usually rectangular and the burial chambers are between 5 to 15 meters long. They are around a meter to two meters high. These structures were covered with a mound that resembled a ship that had overturned. Close to the entrances, there is usually an obelisk, which was used to symbolize the ancestors or gods what watch over the graves.

There are more primitive giant’s tombs. On these, that central slab’s doorway is cut at the base. There are often three slabs used to make the entranceway. These are found throughout Sardinia as well.

Costa Smeralda offers something for everyone. From the beautiful beaches to the wonderful history of the area, you’re sure to find something that peaks your interest. You may even sight a celebrity or two. While there are five star luxury hotels, you can also find cheaper accommodations the farther inland you go.

Costa Smeralda is simply one of the best locations to spend your next vacation. You’re sure to enjoy the weather and the people are very affable. When planning your next vacation, consider this beautiful area of the world.

Enjoying Tourist Attractions in Sardinia

When you are making plans for your next family holiday, you may want to consider the island of Sardinia, the second largest in the Mediterranean. In addition to finding some of the most exciting tourist attractions, in Sardinia you will also get to enjoy some of the best hospitality, accommodations and cuisine you can find while you are on holiday.

There is certainly no dearth of tourist attractions in Sardinia. From ancient archaeological ruins to modern exciting sporting events and fabulous festivals, there is something for everyone here.

Going Back in Time in Sardinia

Sardinia could really be considered a huge open air museum. The Nuraghi are stone structures that have been built over many centuries, but mainly between 1200 and 900 B.C. There are over 7,000 of them were built back then and they are one of the main tourist attractions in Sardinia. If you want to know all about these ruins it is best that you book one of the guided tours rather than going on your own. Another special characteristic of the Nuraghi are the burial chambers, also known as the Tombe dei gigantic or the Giants’ Tombs.

There are many ancient cultures that have left their mark on the island. Some of these can even be dated back before the Nuraghi. The monuments that are really popular tourist attractions in Sardinia are the “Fairy Houses” which can be traced all the way back to 3200 and 2480 B.C.

Other recommended tourist attractions in Sardinia include:

1. The Phoenician city of Sulci
2. The ancient city of Nora
3. The city of Tharros
4. The Trajani forum
5. The ancient Roman city of Turris-ly bissonis
6. The Roman Amphitheatre

The Roman Amphitheatre draws thousands and thousands of tourists each year. Located in Cagliari, this amphitheatre was built between the first and eleventh century A.D. It is the largest Roman Empire monument in Sardinia. The amphitheater was built into the face of a hillside and it held ten thousand people. Most people in the world mistakenly think some of these tourist attractions in Sardinia, especially the Roman Amphitheater are located in Rome, Italy.

Modern Tourist attractions in Sardinia

Other tourist attractions in Sardinia include the shopping. Many of the ancient traditions have stayed the same throughout the centuries. The handicrafts of Sardinia include rugs, baskets, ceramics, and jewelry.

The rugs, tapestries, and linen are made by hand on huge oak looms and usually are done in the fashion of Byzantine art. The dyes are made from berries, herbs, roots, and different types of soil. Weaving is a very popular occupation and one of the common tourist attractions in Sardinia includes watching the artisans use techniques that have been passed down through the centuries. Carpentry is also very important and Sardinia is well known for their exquisitely carved chests made from walnut, chestnut, and durmast trees. You can also find wooden masks, many of which are from figures in Sardinia’s history. These masks are often prevalent during the Carnival.

Outdoor Tourist Attractions in Sardinia

The island of Sardinia is home to an incredible array of wildlife. This is one of the main tourist attractions in Sardinia. Naturalists come to see the bald coots, storks, ducks, cormorants, the endangered Monk seal, and stilt birds on the coast, and the hares, wild cats, Sardinian deer, champis, are often found farther inland. Since much of the shoreline of Sardinia is still wild and unpolluted, the wet areas are home to pink flamingos. The numbers have risen steadily over the years because of the near perfect breeding and nesting conditions here.

One of the reasons that Sardinia is such a hotspot tourism destination is because of its year-long gorgeous climate with over 300 days of sunshine each year. Long hot summers and short mild winters invite tourists out from April until October.

The town has many attractions for visitors including access to a wide range of parks for beautiful garden landscapes. A park that may be worth a visit is Pennington Hall Park which has spectacular floral arrangements towards the entrance. The park opened in 1920 and was initially a museum and art gallery. The museum is definitely worth visiting and remains open every weekend in the year.

A great historical landmark in the city is Mab’s Cross, a cross made from stone which has still been preserved from the 1300′s, although it does not stand in its original condition.
