The Many Faces of Florida

Known as the Sunshine State, Florida benefits from almost all year round fair weather which adds even more possibilities to the already extensive list of things to do during your trip. Whether you want to take in the manmade attractions or natural sights, Florida has plenty of options that fit the bill.

Florida, like any other American state, covers quite a lot of ground so it makes sense to do a little research before your trip, so you can decide where you want to visit when you arrive there.

Starting at the top, northwest Florida stretches from the historic city of Pensacola to Apalachicola on the east. Miles of undeveloped natural beaches, quiet fishing villages and quaint historic districts make you feel like you’ve stumbled across a well kept part of the state.

Panama City Beach overlooks the Gulf of Mexico and is a popular tourist location. With an annual average of 320 days sunshine this is the perfect spot to make the most of the great outdoors. The North Central Region consists of 16 counties extending from Gadsden and Wakulla in the west to Alachua in the east. You will also find Florida’s capital city Tallahassee here.

Northeast Florida, known as the First Coast, has America’s oldest European settlement. Atlantic beaches and inland rural communities offer endless opportunities for adventure in this area.

Central Florida boasts the world’s largest sand pine forest, as well the poplar spot of Orlando where you can climb aboard a rollercoaster and get your adrenaline pumping. Modern man-made attractions and centuries-old natural beauty come together to create a diverse part of the country. The central west area includes the southern part of the Nature Coast and also the popular tourist destinations of Tampa, St Petersburg, Clearwater and Sarasota. The space coast is found in the central east region.

Southwest Florida is famous for unspoiled white sandy beaches, exotic wildlife and lush subtropical foliage. Comprising of the Charlotte, Lee, Collier, Hendry and Glades counties this is Old Florida at its best. Catch a glimpse of an alligator in the Everglades which is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States or hop across to the Ten Thousand Islands that lie in appealing azure waters.

In contrast, southeast Florida has the chic elegance of Palm Beach and the lively atmosphere of Miami Beach. What’s more, a thriving nightlife and diverse population make Miami the world-famous holiday destination that it is.

With there being so many diverse parts to visit, it can prove worthwhile to plan your trip before taking your flights to Florida. That way, you can be sure you will end up spending your time in the part of Florida that most suitably meets your needs.

Losing fats fast! How many calories did you just put into your mouth?

Do we really need to count calories in order to achieve the optimal results from watching out diet? Counting calories for every meal may help for people who prefer to track their calories intake right down to the finer details so that can check their calories consumption vs. calories expenditure for very precise weight management.  However, generally for the rest of us, perhaps bearing in mind the calories yield from the major nutrients I have discussed previously may be suffice to serve as a reminder when it comes to choosing what we want to eat.

Now back to the list below, let us examine them and uncover any possibilites of hidden fats if any.

Salad
Chicken Sandwich
Yogurt
Young Tau Foo
Fish slice noodles with soup

Salad is an old time favourite for people who diet. Did the leafy greens pop in your mind whenever you think of going for healthy food?  The fat trap normally lies in the salad dressing. Most people load on mayonnaise to make the greens taste better . However, this means you are increasing your fat intake which will up your calories consumption as well. It will be a good idea to replace it with a healthier alternative such as olive oil. Or else, try to reduce the amount of dressing.

Chicken sandwich should not sound sinful does it?  The answer lies in the method of cooking. Is it fried or grilled?  The sandwich may also be sprinkled with mayonnaise or thousand island which are high in fat content.  Again this will add on to your calories intake.  I used to think that having chicken sandwich for lunch is healthy and there was a period of time where I actually had it as lunch almost everyday. It was then I realized that I was actually consuming a lot of fats through the sauce. A better alternative would be mustard and always opt for grilled chicken breast if possible.

The 3rd in line is yogurt. Come on, yogurt is supposed to be a healthy snack with excellent source of calcium, protein and also loaded with live cultures right?  Yes,  but when it comes to choosing which type of yogurts, go for those with lowest sugar content as some yogurts are high in sugar level which means you will be consuming more calories that will make you fat.

Young Tau Foo seems harmless enough. We are often advised to go for soupy food if we are serious in watching our diet. This is true provided you leave out those fried stuff like “tau pok”, “fried wanton” and the likes. Fried food items again mean that you are consuming more fats that translate into more calories intake.

Finally, fish slice noodles. I think you got it. DO NOT choose fried fish for your fish slice noodles. Some of the dish comes with milk added into the soup. It is best to go for plain soup.

Based on what is being discussed thus far, it is not hard to figure out that the key to choosing what to eat is really based on the method of cooking. You are in control to choose what you want to eat. You may need to make a conscious effort initially to always opt for a healthier alternative.

Just like myself, I will always request for skim milk whenever I need my cuppa fix. This has become a habit due to my conscious effort to always make the request whenever possible. As we all know, old habits die hard, but once you have made a commitment, it won’t be too hard to adopt good eating habits. Start small as every baby steps counts!

A Caribbean Vacation Destination Unknown To Many

As a Caribbean Vacation Destination Los Roques an archipelago of Venezuela has a lot going for it. Los Roques Archipelago is about one hundred miles north of Caracas, and is a beautiful and ecologically important group of islands which was declared a National Park some thirty five years ago.

One of its attractions as a Caribbean Vacation Destination is its relative inaccessibility, it is probably one of the most remote places of the Caribbean Sea because you either have to sail there or get a flight from Caracas or Margarita or Maracaibo, not names that are very familiar to tourists, European ones at any rate.

What makes Los Roques such a wonderful place is the peace and quiet and the relative calmness of the incredibly colored sea. There are masses of lagoons, over fifty small islands, three hundred emerged sand banks and white coral sand, few of them ever occupied. The sky is almost permanently blue, there is very little rain, and is outside the Caribbean hurricane belt.

Added to this is the fact that Los Roques has the third largest coral reef in the world, this is as Christopher Columbus observed on discovering Los Roques in the fifteenth century a “True Paradise on Earth”.

As Los Roques is a National park this automatically prohibits building high rise hotels so visitors stay in local guesthouses on Gran Roques where you arrive by air or sea, and is the only place with permanent settlements. It is home to over one thousand two hundred people.

The visitors, and there are around fifty thousand a year, who come to Los Roques for a Caribbean vacation are normally attracted by the stunning beauty of the beaches, and of course to scuba dive and snorkel the coral reef. Sport fishing and windsurfing are other popular activities at Los Roques

The guesthouses, inns and Pousadas on Gran Roques tend to be very picturesque, and are probably a luxuriously refurbished old fisherman house. Lodging usually includes breakfast and dinner, and can range in price for as little as USD50 to USD200 per night per person. Some of the guesthouses also include in the price transfers to nearby islands, lunch, sunbeds, umbrellas and equipment for snorkeling.

You could also stay on a boat, or even camp in specially designated areas, but far and away the most popular option is to stay in a pousada.

Having said the only accommodation is on Gran Roques, you can get to a small cay called Rasqui where there is a small lodge with only two rooms, and is really a private island. You should also visit Water Cay known as Cayo de Agua, which is totally deserted and absolutely beautiful.

Why not visit Dos Mesquises where the Los Roques Scientific Foundation has a program involving adopting a turtle, and is well worth visiting.

Could you find a better Caribbean Vacation destination than Los Roques Venezuela, where there are no hurricanes, miles and miles of white sand beaches, countless uninhabited islands and coral reefs teeming with multicolored undersea life.
There’s simply nowhere like it in the Caribbean, but go now whilst it is still a secret.
