Native American History RV Vacation – Four Corners Itinerary
Where the borders of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah meet, you’ll find a treasure trove of Native American history. In the Four Corners area you can visit Mesa Verde, Hovenweep National Monument, Canyon de Chelly National Monument and Monument Valley.
Mesa Verde, in southwestern Colorado, is the site of ancient cliff dwellings and spectacular scenery. Winding roads lead to the canyon rim throughout this National Park. You will find numerous lookout points offering amazing glimpses of the cliff dwellings where ancient Puebloans lived for more than seven hundred years
North and west of Mesa Verde, along the Utah/Colorado border, you’ll find Hovenweep National Monument. The ruins of six prehistoric Pueblo dwellings dot the canyons of Hovenweep, with towers rising far above canyon walls.
Continue your Native American History RV vacation with a stop in Monument Valley in northeastern Arizona. You’ll probably remember the sandstone buttes and towers from hundreds of Westerns filmed there. Native American guides who live within the valley will lead you off the main trails to sites that mark the legacy of their ancestors.
Your final leg of a Four Corners RV camping trip should definitely include Canyon de Chelly near the Arizona/New Mexico border. The Canyon, completely located on Navajo tribal land, offers an entire vacation’s worth of historical treasures. The windswept canyons and buttes of Canyon de Chelly are home to more than two thousand archaeological sites.
Native American History RV Vacation – Northern Itinerary
When you’re ready for another round of Native American history, plan some RV camping in the Badlands and Black Hills of the north central U.S. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument in Montana lets visitors relive the battle that claimed the lives of most of the 7th Cavalry Division under Lt. Col George Armstrong Custer in 1876. Here in the place Sitting Bull and several thousand Lakota and Cheyenne warriors were victorious, you’ll find breathtaking scenery and plenty of Native American artifacts to explore.
The Black Hills of South Dakota are home to the Crazy Horse Memorial, where sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski began creating his enormous tribute to the Lakota chief in 1948. Come watch as progress on the colossal sculpture continues, and stay to visit the Native American Cultural Center and Indian Museum of North America.
Finish your RV camping trip to find Native American history with a stop at the Wounded Knee Museum in Wall, South Dakota. About fifty miles from the actual site of the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890, the Museum tells the story of the tragic deaths of almost 300 Lakota Sioux at Pine Ridge.

Like all the Hawaiian islands, Kaua’i was made by volcanoes pushing up, out of the sea. This island’s ruler, Kaumuali’i, managed to twice thwart invasion from King Kamehameha, even going so far as to negotiate with the Russians in an effort to maintain independence. He finally ceded Kaua’i on his deathbed to the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1824 in order to avoid further bloodshed.
The first well recorded European contact came in 1778 when Captain Cook landed in Waimea Bay. Starting in the mid-18th century, sugar plantations were Kauai’s most important industry, and opened the way for the waves of immigrants, whose ancestors make up Kauai’s multicultural population today.
Kauai originally had its own dialect, thought to be closer to its Polynesian origins than the other islands, and managed independence for so long in part because of its 1000-ft cliffs ringing the Na Pali Coast, a place that is accessible only by hiking, boat or helicopter even today!
Today, buying or renting Kauai condos means that you will take part in a line of paradise-seeking people dating back over a thousand years. History and Beauty in One Place
Captiva Island has long been considered the perfect vacation destination. Captiva is Sanibel IslandÕs sister island, and is quite a bit smaller and quieter. Discover Natural History and Amazing Wildlife
Sanibel Island had humble beginnings as a sandbar. Over hundreds of years, that sandbar grew off the coast of southwest Florida to become the beautiful, eleven-mile long island that it is today. The island, and its sister Captiva, are home to some of Florida’s most amazing wildlife communities, as well as some lush foliage that can rarely be seen anywhere else on Earth. Visitors will likely drive to the island from Miami, over the causeway that was completed in 1974. The causeway was specifically designed so that it would never interfere with any of the natural resources located on the island.
The island was first inhabited by the Calusa, a tribe of Native Americans. These inhabitants found that the land and water could easily sustain them with farming and fishing. The natural resources of island are still protected to this day by an executive order from President Harry Truman. Visitor and residents alike can enjoy the meandering bicycle paths that cover the island and offer amazing views of animals and plants that are normally only seen in captivity.
The J.N. Darling Wildlife refuge has been a major focal point on the island since 1967. There are nearly three thousand acres of pristine wetlands and forest for visitors to explore, though it is important to remain on paths at all times. Some of the animals may be dangerous of course, but not as dangerous as you are to the delicate ecosystems that can be found. You can participate in several learning activities at the “Ding” Darling Wildlife Refuge, including lessons on protecting our environment and histories of the animals and plants that inhabit the island.
Though the island does have very strict protection for its natural areas, there are still many modern conveniences for visitors. There are dozens of hotels and resorts that dot the island, offering fun beach activities and water sports. Shops and galleries are abundant in the village area, with gifts, fashions, and crafts available throughout the year. The dining on Sanibel and Captiva are second to none, as well.
