The Drive Home

We ran into a traffic jam on the way home from our camping vacation… not fun… especially not fun when you have an infant in the car.

How did you adjust to driving on the left side of the road when visiting countries that drive on the left?

I am going to New Zealand in April, and plan to rent a car for my travels to explore the island. Living in the USA, and only driving in Mexico, USA, and Canada I have always drove on the right side of the road on the 10 years I have been driving. How hard is it to adjust to the left side of the road? Usually when I visit other countries I never rent a car, so its never an issue. Are there any tips? Right now my plan is just to wing it, and hope I dont forget. I also figure thousands upon thousands make the same adjustment who have been driving for far longer, or less than me, and have no issues, but I just want to make sure I dont spend my vacation taking care of a head on collision. I have a clean driving record, so I am a safe driver, and I live in LA, so traffic, and other hazards dont bother me much, I am also a very defensive driver. I’m just kind of nervous on driving on the left side of the road. Thanks.

600 Pounds to Fight Hunger…directbuy of Suffolk County Holds Second Annual Food Drive and Fall Festival

HAUPPAUGE, NYâ?¦

In todayâ??s economy, most families have to focus on feeding, clothing, and taking care of their own. So when those same families go out of their way to help others in need, the donations are that much more meaningful. On October 25, DirectBuy of Suffolk County held itâ??s second annual food drive and fall festival, collecting more than 600 lbs of food and supplies for Long Island Cares, the only food bank on Long Island.

In addition to the food drive, members of the Hauppauge-based showroom were treated to a day of fun and festivities. DirectBuy of Suffolk County is the local branch of DirectBuy, Inc., a home furnishings and remodeling company that allows its members to purchase directly from over 700 brand-name manufacturers and authorized suppliers with no hidden retail mark-up.

â??We have run a successful business in Suffolk County for over 18 yearsâ? said DirectBuy of Suffolk County president and franchise owner Rob Bengston. â??We wanted to celebrate with our loyal members, and do some good at the same time.â?

The DirectBuy Suffolk staff chose to support Long Island Cares because currently food banks are desperate for help. Long Island Cares was founded in 1980 by the late singer/activist Harry Chapin in response to the needs of hungry Long Islanders. The leading anti-hunger organization works with other charities to fight hunger in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

â??Long Island Cares is a wonderful program and very necessary especially in today’s economical conditions,â? said DirectBuy member Purnima Shah, who attended the festival.

DirectBuyâ??s Suffolk showroom was brightly decorated with ribbons, balloons and more than 40 baskets of gifts that were raffled off to those who brought in non-perishable food or other supplies. The baskets included gifts of cookware, artwork, toys, camping and sporting equipment, movie tickets, theater tickets and giftware. Children were entertained with balloon art and face painting, and all guests enjoyed trying a variety of dishes throughout the festival.

â??This festival is our way of saying thank you to our members,â? said DirectBuy of Suffolk County Showroom Manager Myriam Lebron. â??We wanted to show we care for our members and also for this great community where we all live.â?

â??My wife and I have been members of DirectBuy since 1997,â? said Robert Meehan. â??We came to the showroom today to help celebrate DirectBuy’s association with the charity Long Island Cares. Our membership has been 11 years of profitable and enjoyable experiences for us. The money we have saved is incredible. Thanks to DirectBuy, we have much more money for ourselves. The customer service is second to none.â?
