Microtel Boracay

Travelling always brings out the inner manager in me. I simply have to have everything organized, planned and of course, within reasonable budget. Looking for the perfect hotel can be a chore, especially in Boracay where there are hundreds to choose from!

To narrow down the selection, we’ve decided that the perfect hotel for us would have to be beachfront, with a pool, 24-hour service, free breakfast (extra convenience for lazy mornings when getting up is difficult), two queen beds so my daughter can have her own, a balcony with a nice view, and most importantly, doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. Imagine my happiness when everything in my list can be found in Microtel, from the chain of Microtel hotels worldwide which prides itself in offering the same great amenities and service in any Microtel hotel. That means what you get in New York, you get in Boracay.

Yes, we got a beach-front hotel with its famed chiropractor beds and pillows that really help you get a good night’s sleep. It is located along a cove in Diniwid Beach, a quiet part farther than Station 1. What’s amazing in this hotel is the consistent excellent service from all the staff: the front desk that warmly welcomes and arranges your trips to D’Mall (yes, free shuttle service to and from D’Mall till midnight. They even call you up to check if you want to go back!), the drivers, restaurant staff, towel boy at the pool, and even the ladies and gentlemen cleaning, sweeping inside and out of the hotel. They are also the only hotel I’ve seen which cleans the pool several times a day and rakes the sand around the pool so its pattern is pleasing to the eye.

There are several design elements all around that I especially appreciate, and which my 9-year-old approves: the tropical resort-like feel of our room, the furniture in the lobby, restaurant and lounge areas, the pool chaise lounge with mattress and fluffy pillows, the landscaping around the pool, We also like being welcomed with shell leis and invigorating eucalyptus scented cold towels (a heaven-sent after a long trip and bumpy tricycle ride).

The complimentary breakfast is quite good and satisfying. In fact, after an 8am breakfast, we would usually have our next light meal around 2pm, which is easy on the pocket as there was no need to take afternoon snack and we can have dinner at 7 or 8pm.

Not all rooms have a balcony with great view of trees and plants, so make sure to request for one. Most of the other rooms have a window seat in lieu of a balcony. Of course, if you have the budget, the best room would be the second floor double premium room which has a bigger balcony and fantastic views of the sea, beach and swimming pool below. There are only two suite room with its own kitchen, dining room and living area and these are on the ground floor right beside the pool.

We are definitely going back to Microtel Boracay as it offers the best value for your money. It has a pool for kids and shuttle service for going around. Plus it’s not located on the busier White Beach especially Station 2 where it can get crowded, even after the Holy Week. Microtel offers the best of both worlds: privacy when you need it and convenience and proximity to the more popular areas of the island. Just a tip to get en even better rate (like a cool thousand pesos off the regular room rate, which starts at Php 4,500.00): call the hotel directly to book a room. Although you can book online or call their Manila office, the savings you get from direct booking is awesome. Just call (63 36)288-4311 or 0917-7165004.

20 Out of a Thousand Things to Try in Boracay

Strip yourself from the sweltering heat of Manila and step into even hotter territory, where you can get toasty-brown and cozy with friends and family.

Touted as one of the world’s best beaches, Boracay is certainly a place where possibilities are endless!!! Here are just a few of the thousand things you can do where the sand is “sugar-white” and delicious adventures are always in sight.

1. Sip a cold fruit shake by the shore.

2. Watch the sun rise and sun set.

3. Build sandcastles, or pose by one for that keepsake photo.

4. Shop for surfer-dude duds (Boracay is a place where shades and native bracelets abound on every sandy corner. Not to mention sarongs, loose white shirts that show off your tan, and shell home decorations to hang on your walls when you get back home.)

4. Play 18 holes of golf.

5. Skim-board (it’s surfing on sand on a piece of fiberglass. You can make a day of it by learning how, doing it well, or simply have a blast watching others get washed up and end up sharing a few good laughs).

6. Pack your sunblock, camera, and sarong, and island-hop.

7. Go parasailing.

8 Ride horses by the beach.

9. Try the chori-burgers cooked fresh on the side streets.

10. Visit the batcaves.

11. Explore new places to stay, tap into this resort called Grand Boracay resort

Grand Boracay is a resort that’s located right in D’Mall of Boracay’s famous Station 2, an idyllic getaway that gives you an option to splash around in a lagoon-shaped pool and snooze in a comfy, airconditioned guestroom when the sun gets too scorching on the beach).

12.Take a ride on the banana boat.

13. Get a henna tattoo.

14. Get your usually-straight hair in braids that’ll shame Bob Marley.

15. Visit and see the dead forests south of the island, next to the fishponds for some artsy photo ops.

16. Get a massage, either by a licensed masseuse or those by the beach whom beachcombers swear are just as qualified.

17. Dance under the stars with friends in any of the Boracay bars and discos.

18. Windsurf.

19. Swim.

20. Hop on an all-terrain vehicle and explore the dunes, there are 2-seater ATVs for rent on the island.

However which way you decide to fill your time in sunny Boracay, you can rest assured that you’ve already a lot of pebbles to fill your memory glass jar, colorful stories to tell, that could be as bright as the sun, and as dramatic and mysterious as its famous sunset.
